Pakistan General Elections '13 Finally Ends

Elections make a great contribution to democratic governance. It enables the people to cast their votes to elect representatives to hold them accountable to their office because a democratic government must be conducted through representatives. Election has also become a major factor in stabilization and democratization of emerging democracies and post-conflict countries. The establishment of an independent and well-functioning Election Commission is a crucial element for the success.

Election 2013
Election 2013

Election 2013 was the great hope for the Pakistani nation to elect the person according to their choice and cast the vote to the person whom they think can lift the country towards success and development and take them out of all the problems the nation had gone through till now.

Election 2013 was a great achievement because the previous government of Pakistan Peoples Party completed their five years of rule successfully. Elections were supposed to be held on 11th May 2013. Whole nation had stood up with an enthusiasm to bring a leader who might give them a sigh of relaxation. All political parties had become active and started their election campaign all over the Pakistan to gain popular support. Big banners, flags and pamphlets were seen everywhere in the country.

From all areas of Pakistan, different individual candidates and candidates from all political parties participated in elections as candidates for National and Provincial assemblies. In Punjab, PMLN and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf were in the ground of battleship to run their campaign freely. However, Karachi, Quetta and Peshawar were declared as the red zone due to security reasons. PPP, MQM and ANP were being threatened from the very first day after the abolishment of the previous government. Terrorist alarmed them to stay out of the elections and do not run any election campaign anywhere otherwise they would be blasted by bomb. Several bombs were blasted on offices and Jalsas of MQM, ANP and PPP by terrorists.

For the National Assembly, PMLN, PTI, MQM, Jamat e Islami and PPP were the strong political parties. PTI and PMLN had strong candidates for Punjab Provincial Assembly. MQM, PPP and PMLF were having strong candidates for Sindh Assembly however PTI, JUI Fand Jamat e Islami were strong in KPK Assembly and BNP, PMLN were strong from Balochistan Assembly.

After all, voting took place on 11th May 2013. Due to some reasons, polling did not take place in some polling stations. Few incidents of rigging were also reported in some areas however whole electing process took place successfully and finally the results got announced on the next day. PMLN got a high number of seats in National Assembly leading with more than 120 seats. However, PTI won the elections on the National Assembly on around 30 seats and PPP got about 35 seats. MQM was successful to secure 18 National Assembly seats. PTI chairman, Imran Khan secured 3 National Assembly seats.

On Provincial basis, PMLN got majority in Punjab with PTI on the second position. In KPK PTI got lead on provincial seats and JUI F got second highest. In Sindh, PPP got the high number of seat in provincial assembly and MQM got the second highest majority in provincial assembly. In Balochistan, PMLN got the majority.

During the whole electoral process, NA 250 had become a controversial constituency. On the day of election polling failed to start on 43 polling stations of NA 250. However PTI protest for polling in these 43 polling stations and MQM was in the favor for repolling in the whole constituency. Several protests are done by MQM and Pakistan Tehreek e Insaaf. Election Commission denied the application of MQM for repolling in all polling stations of NA 250 and MQM boycott elections from NA 250. And on 19th May, Dr Arif Alvi a candidate of PTI has won from NA 250.

Now the result is showing that the Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (PMLN) is going to establish the democratic government in Pakistan. Nawaz Sharif will take the charge of Prime Minister of Pakistan for the third time. Now the whole Pakistani nation is looking towards the upcoming government to solve all the critical and serious problems country has been facing like terrorism, inflation, law and order issues, electricity shortfall and others social and economic problems. Also the people are full of hope that there elected representatives will make Pakistan a democratic and a developed country.

City of Lights seems to burn

Karachi "City of Lights" is the largest city of Pakistan with the population of about 20 million. It is a metropolis city and identified as a heart and center of Pakistan. It is a financial hub of Pakistan and a seaport. It is also referred as Mini-Pakistan because people all over the country come to Karachi in search of business and work.

City of Lights
Karachi - City Of Lights

Since the PPP democratic government has taken over the country, about 4000 people have been killed in the city. The political reconciliation has proved to be a complete disaster for the resident of city. The government of Sindh has totally failed to provide security to the citizens. Persistent deteriorating of law and order, kidnapping, brutal target killing of political and religious people, money extortion, bomb explosions and packed dead bodies found in sack are pushing the country towards lawlessness and destruction.

These days every type of crime is going in the city. Extortion, kidnapping for ransom, thefts, ethnic killings, bomb blast, land grabbing and many other crimes are leading in the city. Getting hold of the major share of the extortion is the bone of contention between the political parties which is a cause of violence in city.

Target Killing
Target Killing

Killing of about 15 people in the city has become the trend of every day. Mostly, victims are the workers political party, a religious party, a businessman and personal enmity. Fast growing extortion causes the death of businessmen in different areas of Karachi. Police force is incompetent and politicized hence they are not being able to take control over the unlawful conditions of the city. Criminals have complete freedom to move here and there with the weapons in the city and cause violence and terrorist activities in the city. They feel it easy to torch public properties, vehicles and to kill someone without any difficulties.

Karachi being recognized as “Illuminated City”, now has lost its serene and vibrancy and giving a desert look like curfew and war-torn area. It is a very frightening, worrying and upsetting situation for all citizens of the city. Not a single person feels secure to go out for work. Even parents are worried to send their kids to schools and other educational institutes. They feared to travel in public transport and to go in public places because there is always a danger of terrorism going in the mind of citizens.

Public Transport set on fire

Hot debates are going on TV channels, newspapers and internet in order to cope with the extensive lawlessness in Karachi but not a single prominent has been noticed so far. The limited safety and security measures taken by the government are proved ineffective. Even the suo moto action taken by the Chief Justice last year on Karachi killing not yet yield the desired result as the perpetrators were neither identified nor brought to justice. Also the two big political parties in the city, MQM and ANP have demanded the army operation in the city to muddle through the law and order disability in the city.

Not only the citizen of Karachi, but the people from all over the Pakistan have been praying for the complete cleanup of the criminal activities from the largest city of Pakistan. They are demanding army operation or emergeny in the region and are hopeful that the control of army will bring peace in the city and Karachi will be able to become a “City of Light” again.
